This small, brightly-colored enamel is typical of mid-eighteenth-century portraiture and of Hone's work. It is modest in size, unpretentious and is an unidealized characterization. One peculiarity is the off-center placement of the sitter, which permits the depiction of the column and the artist's monogram and date.
