Description Based on a romantic German fairy tale, this painting was commissioned by nineteenth-century Charleston collector, Francis James Porcher. Steinbruck was a professor at the Berlin Academy known for his works of romantic and poetic subject matter. In his catalogue of paintings, Porcher recounted his delight with the colorful piece:

“In the realms of fancy, this beautiful painting holds the same relation to art that the poem of the German, [Ludwig] Tieck does to literature. The artist evidently held brotherhood with the poet for he has told the story of the little girl’s adventure over the stream into fairyland quite as well as the poet. It is a most graceful and touching work, and has no superior of its class in the whole range of modern art. It is a charming piece of fancy and as chaste as it is charming.”
