A native Charlestonian, Willis attended school in Charleston and New York where she pursued her love of the arts. In 1900 she left for Paris to study at the College de France and the Louvre. She attended the Paris Exposition of 1900, and upon her return to Charleston she was appointed chairman the Fine Art Division for the South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition of 1901-02.
During her life Willis was an active promoter of the arts in Charleston. She wrote numerous articles about Charleston art and theater, and served as chairman of the Art Commission of Charleston for many years.
