Description Throughout her career, Alice Smith drew inspiration from nature. A native Charlestonian, she spent her entire life painting, promoting, and writing about the South Carolina Lowcountry. She received early training through the Carolina Art Association (the governing body of the Gibbes Museum of Art) in the 1890s. Instead of formal training in New York or Europe, she learned from the informal instruction of artists visiting Charleston and from direct observation of nature. Drawing upon these diverse influences, Smith created her own style, in a variety of mediums that translated her love of nature and the Carolina Lowcountry.
