Although the precise identity of this sitter is unknown, through its descent in the Gibbes-Shoolbred family it is presumed to be a mid-eighteenth-century ancestor. The portrayal is straightforward and crisply delineated with an intent expression. Clothing and background are reduced to a minimum, and coloring consists of somber grays.
