Description The young man has been identified as Archibald Scott by a pencil notation on a slip of paper inside the locket. An individual of that name resided on James Island. Due to the small format and gray tonalities, the portrait relates to Peale's earliest period when the influence of Charles Willson Peale was the strongest.
