Description Joyner emigrated in the early 1800s from Bristol, England and settled in Beaufort. With its careful delineation of hair and clothing, Joyners portrait is typical of Cloriviere's work. Usually the artist posed his sitters frontally, as here, suggesting his reluctance to accept the challenges of foreshortening and shadowing.
