Description |
A native of Connecticut, Hayden came to Charleston in 1837 to become a partner in Hayden & Co., silversmiths. The pose with the figure sitting was a standard one for the 1840s and replaced the more direct and simple ovals of the 1820s. As a result, the sitter becomes more distant and reserved, qualities that can also be seen in contemporary oil portraits.
