Description |
Born in Savannah, Georgia, West Fraser spent most of his childhood in Hilton Head, South Carolina. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, he moved to New England where he pursued a career in watercolor as a marine artist. In 1984, he returned to South Carolina and settled in Charleston where he is considered one of the most important contemporary plein air artists of the region. Depicting the coastal inlets and islands of the Lowcountry as well as Charleston's unique cityscape, Fraser's style harkens back to the work of early twentieth century American Impressionist artists such as William Merritt Chase, John Twachtman, and Childe Hassam. Yet, Fraser endows his work with a freshness that only the Lowcountry landscape can inspire. |
